Phishing and security: Common scams

Fraudsters will try and contact you by methods such as email to try and gain your personal information.

These messages may be created to look like they have come from a genuine email address from Secure Trust Bank. They will usually contain links to websites which may look like your Internet Banking and will ask you to enter your login details and other personal information.

We may contact you from time to time by email with useful information about products and services, but we will:

  • Never email you a link that takes you straight to the Online Banking log-in page
  • Never email you asking you to verify your account details
  • Never email you to ask for your card details, PIN, authorisation codes or passwords
  • Never email you asking you to confirm a recent transaction

Be especially wary if the email doesn't include your proper name or contains spelling mistakes or poor grammar.

If you receive a suspicious email that claims to be from us, please forward it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and then delete it immediately.

Phishing

A 'phishing email' (pronounced fishing) is a trick in which criminals will attempt to get hold of your personal information.

Phishing typically happens when criminals send convincing looking fraudulent emails. These emails are often sent to thousands of individuals in the hope that they will be tricked into providing personal security information (usernames, passwords and bank account details). Key indicators of a phishing email can include; casual or informal wording, poor grammar or spelling, links to pages and warnings that accounts will be closed.

Advance fee scams

This type of scam involves the promise of a large sum of money upon receipt of an upfront fee. 

Typical examples could be inheritance, lottery wins and prize draws. However, genuine organisations dealing with these activities will never ask for an advanced fee.

Pension scams

Pension scams typically involve promises of pension investment opportunities or unsolicited offers to help you release cash from pensions early.

With over 55's getting greater access to their retirement savings from April 2015, there are increased opportunities for investment scammers to convince people to invest pension pots into unregulated or bogus schemes. Software scams

Software scams often involve an unsolicited call from a computer company or technical repair department of a financial institution.

They will persuade you to install some software or accept a remote connection to access your computer. From here the caller may ask you to access your online account and will pretend that a virus has been removed or that they have 're-secured' your computer. Often this process compromises the victims security details or allows them to install key logger viruses onto the machine. If you get such a call, do not follow instructions to follow links or accept connections, and if you believe this be a scam, terminate the call and re-run your own recognised anti-virus software.

Money mule scams

A money mule is the term used to describe someone who may knowingly or unknowingly allow their financial accounts to be used by a criminal.

Money mules receive funds into their accounts and then move the money on, typically overseas. The funds are often monies that are stolen from other people and the criminal uses this method to distance themselves from the act of Money Laundering. The criminals recruit innocent people into this scam often by email from job search websites or loan broker sites and they are asked to receive and move money elsewhere. It is important to remember that handling money that has been obtained fraudulently is a crime, even if you do not know where the money came from. Don't allow your account to be used to move money for others for any purpose, even if you have been given an apparently innocent reason to do so.


 

Card Fraud

Take care of your cards

  • Sign new cards as soon as you get them and keep them in a safe place
  • Never let someone take your card away to process a transaction - this would breach our terms and conditions
  • Never hand your card over to anyone that comes to your door
  • Report any lost or stolen cards immediately without undue delay

Protect your security details

  • Don't use personal details or combinations that are easy to guess for your passwords or PINs
  • Never disclose your PIN to anyone, not even us or the police
  • Never enter your PIN in to the telephone
  • Always cover your PIN when you have to enter it to avoid 'shoulder surfing'
  • Change your PIN and passwords immediately if you think someone else may know it

On the high street

  • If anything about a cash machine looks suspicious, don't use it. Find an alternative ATM
  • Don't let anyone distract you during your transactions, even if they seem to be being helpful
  • Contact us straight away if your card is unexpectedly retained by a cash machine
  • Never let another person take your card out of your sight, even to take deposits or pay bills

Online shopping

  • Use a computer or device that has up to date security software
  • Only enter your details on secure sites - check the web address for 'https'. Often your browser may turn 'green'
  • Always log out of online accounts after shopping, especially if you are using a public computer
