Regular saving is the key to success according to Secure Trust Bank 'Savvy Savers'

To coincide with UK Savings Week a new survey has revealed that while many struggle to form healthy savings habits, Secure Trust Bank customers are amongst the most Savvy Savers. A massive 96% consider themselves confident savers, according to the results of the bank's first customer savings panel survey.

The research, conducted with nearly 500* people from the bank's customer panel, reveals a strong culture of planning and financial engagement, with many respondents demonstrating habits that financial experts routinely recommend. From regularly reviewing savings rates to building reserves early in life, the findings suggest Secure Trust Bank customers take a proactive approach to making their money work harder compared to the national population. The findings come as UK Savings Week highlights that around 14 million people across the UK have less than £100 in savings available for emergencies

Key Findings

In total, 96% of respondents view themselves as having positive savings habits.

62% describe themselves as "very savvy" savers who regularly plan and review their savings.

Many started saving young

54% said they began saving regularly before the age of 24.

This compares with wider industry research showing that 45% of under 24's have no savings at all.

Saving is a regular habit

66% put money into savings either every payday or at least once a month.

44% save at least monthly.

22% move money into savings every time they are paid.

More than eight in ten respondents review their savings at least every few months, reinforcing the importance of regularly checking whether money is earning a competitive return.

Customers actively manage their money

35% regularly review the interest rates on their savings accounts to ensure they remain competitive.

43% say keeping savings separate from day-to-day spending is one of their most important saving habits.

Consistency matters more than the amount

37% said the most important saving tip they would share is to save regularly, even if the amount is small.

32% either save automatically when they are paid or use scheduled transfers to build savings consistently.

Savings doesn't always start with a goal

47% are simply building savings without a particular goal, compared with 29% saving specifically for retirement.

Rajat Mehta, Savings Director at Secure Trust Bank Group, said:

"UK Savings Week provides an important opportunity to spotlight the value of building strong savings habits. One of the most striking findings is that successful savers aren't necessarily those putting away the largest amounts. They're the people who make saving a routine. Whether it's moving money aside on payday, reviewing rates regularly, or keeping savings separate from spending accounts, the common thread is consistency.

"The findings show that successful saving is not necessarily about setting aside large amounts. It's about consistency, planning ahead and regularly reviewing whether your money is working as hard as it can. Whether it's saving on payday, keeping savings separate from everyday spending, or checking interest rates regularly, small actions can make a meaningful difference over time.

"Far too many people in the UK have cash languishing in low interest accounts which means they are not making the most of their investments. At Secure Trust Bank we aim to offer a wide range of products that enable UK savers to make the most of their money which is probably why this survey indicates that our customers are amongst the most Savvy Savers.  We hope these insights inspire others to think about their own approach to saving and to take simple steps towards building healthier financial habits."
